Prepping for the Holidays

Internet Marketers and traditional brick-and-mortar retailers have one thing in common during the holidays:  the potential to draw a huge chuck of yearly sales.

Internet marketers face a huge challenge from retail outlets:  “Black Friday”, “Cyber Monday” sales, midnight-madness sales–you name it; whatever tricks retailers can use to bring in the crowds, they will.

Sure, there are plenty of people who try to avoid the chaotic auto traffic, rush of shoppers, and standing in long lines at midnight waiting for an “in-store only” sale at the crack of dawn.  Those are the shoppers that seek relief through the online version of the sales.

However, most shoppers soon discover that seeing the “sold out” sign is just as likely online as it is in the stores.  No matter what the perception is of the state of the economy, holiday shopping rarely seems to suffer. 🙂

So, what does this mean for Internet Marketers?

In all likelihood the game has already been won or lost in terms of how well you prepared for the holiday season!  If you have prepared well, then you have prepared early.

Holiday Planning

Affiliate marketers take advantage of the holiday season by sometimes preparing months in advance.  It is all about positioning.  You position your ad, your website, your social media interaction to be “everywhere” when the market needs you most:  the holiday shopping period.

The holiday shopping season can be seen as lasting from the day after Thanksgiving through Christmas.  However, don’t discount the “after-Christmas” sales, New Year’s “clearance” sales, and the not-too-distance Valentine’s Day sales as well.

Has this season already passed you by?  Perhaps, depending on how aggressive you are and how quick you can take action!  Even so, it is never too late to plan for 2013 to make it an even better year.

In an article by Mashable, it is stated that 45% of shoppers buy items online that they wouldn’t buy in person.  Here are some of the statistics stated in that article:

  • 73% of people do at least half of their shopping onlineOnline Shopping is on the Rise
  • 66% prefer to shop online rather than in a store
  • 4 out of 5 shop online for a broader selection
  • 2 out of 3 shop online because it is cheaper
  • 96% are more likely to shop on a site if it has free shipping

Additional statistics enforce the idea that online shopping has become a preferred method of shopping for many–if not most–consumers.  Are you prepared to take advantage of it?

Leveraging social media channels is a powerful way to reach consumers in many markets.  Social media traffic should not be overlooked, and should be seen as an important part of any traffic generation campaign.

Whatever media channels you use to interact with your intended audience, it is important to do it sooner rather than later!  Getting out in front of your audience as early as possible will allow them to become comfortable with you and your message.  The decision to buy will be one they make naturally–from you, someone who has been there for a while and someone they trust.
